Why Michael Jackson Is The Top Touring Act In America, Again

Sammy Davis, Jr. once said that "everything Michael Jackson does on stage is exactly right." The King of Pop indeed left some big leather loafers to fill, but judging by the crowd's reaction at MGM's Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Cirque du Soleil's Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour is doing an admirable job.
Among those in attendance for Saturday night's performance: Cee Lo Green, as well as Jay-Z and Beyonce Knowles. Seated within view of the reporters assembled to chronicle the show, the couple laughed and smiled as acrobats and dancers swirled across the stage--zombies popping out of coffins, contortionists emerging from giant books, even a performer dressed as a giant white glove--all while a live band blasted out the soundtrack beneath Jackson's soaring vocals.
“We have all done our best to make this a celebration of his essence in his absence,” musical director Greg Phillinganes told me shortly after the show's debut. “His passion for humanity … his commitment to excellence, his flair for the big show, we’ve tried to incorporate all those factors.”
Immortal is the highest-grossing live show in the country for the second week in a row, bringing in just shy of $2 million per night in Vegas. That's over half a million dollars more than the next-highest earner, Taylor Swift, according to concert data provider Pollstar.
It's all the more impressive given that the Jackson show has been parked at the 8,500-seat Mandalay Bay Theatre for much of December; Swift has been playing arenas more than twice that size, as Immortal will soon be doing when resumes its trek across the North America. An international leg is set to follow in late 2012.
A joint venture between the Michael Jackson estate and Cirque du Soleil, Immortal opened in October and is already approaching $100 million in ticket sales. That should come as no surprise, given the extraordinary spectacle that audiences witness with each performance.
The show begins with a spotlight illuminating a mime clad in all white; his shell-toed sneakers and backwards hat make him look more b-boy than sad clown. As he cozies up to an image of Michael Jackson that fills a giant video screen at the back of the stage, the pictures melts away to reveal the band, and a troupe of dancers streams onto the stage.
The mime serves as a guide throughout the performance, starting with Jackson's early years and the song "Have You Seen My Childhood." There's a miniature hot air balloon and a Jackson Five montage complete with dancers dressed as Marlon, Tito, Jermaine, Jackie and Michael--oversized afros included. As the show continues, a replica of the Neverland gates rolls out, followed by performers dressed as Bubbles the Chimp and some of the other animals that once resided in Jackson's private zoo.
Next comes the "Smooth Criminal" segment. The screens behind the stage turn black-and-white, revealing a video of Jackson outsmarting a series of detectives as they try to track him down. All the while, tommy gun-toting dancers decked out in fedoras and pinstriped suits mimic and elaborate upon Jackson's moves, culminating in a flurry of pyrotechnics and mock gunfire that leaves only one dancer standing.
Perhaps the most impressive is the scene that comes next. The surviving gangster rips off her white suit to reveal nothing more than a shimmering bikini--and proceeds to ascend a slim tube that extends 30 feet or so into the air. Upon reaching the top she launches into an aerial pole-dance, contorting herself into positions that would seem impossible even on solid ground. At some point, she manages to hold herself perpendicular to the structure, supported by nothing besides her own strength.
Pushing the boundaries of the human body are trademarks of Cirque du Soleil, and that's one of the many examples in which Immortal lives up to its lofty expectations (There's also a scene where one acrobat lifts a partner into the air using only a strap hanging from his mouth; in another, a green dancer folds herself into a pretzel-shape and walks on her hands).
There's a bit of tongue-and-cheek humor, too: at one point, Michael Jackson's trademark black loafers appear as Mini Cooper-sized characters, each manned by a single dancer.
Though Immortal pays homage to Jackson's biggest hits--"Thriller," "Billie Jean" and "Man in the Mirror," to name a few--it also showcases some of Jackson's later work, including the environmental anthem "Earth Song" and the oddly prescient "They Don't Care About Us." The latter of features scores of stomping robots with dollar signs emblazoned on their metallic chests, an idea dreamed up years before the birth of Occupy Wall Street.
Immortal features quite a few mashups of Jackson's music, so it's only fitting that the show ends with a parade of dancers hoisting flags that bear the combined symbols of various nations.
The production's narrative arc does jump around a bit, as one might expect given the diverse nature of Jackson's oeuvre. But Immortal's architects managed to connect everything in a generally coherent manner--quite an achievement, given the staggering array of individual songs and mashups that made the final cut.
At any rate, the show has clearly passed the necessary tests in Vegas. Plans are already in the works to renovate the Mandalay Bay Theatre, which currently houses the Lion King, to accommodate a modified version of Immortal in time for a 2013 opening. If this month's run is any indication, it should be a bonanza for MGM, Cirque du Soleil and the Jackson estate.
Though Jay-Z and Beyonce ducked out as the performers were taking their final bows on Saturday night, it's clear that another superstar--Michael Jackson--will be staying in Las Vegas for quite some time.

"Hola everyone. I was recently sent a link to an article written by Rodger Friedman. Please don't pay this reporter-gossiper any attention. He has been nothing but anti-Jackson since day one and has made a career off of it. However like the sneaky snake he is, he wiggles around the truth and smothers it with convincing lies. I saw him do this to my uncle while he was still alive. And my brothers and I have unfortunately witnessed this first hand as well. We have been at the receiving end of a couple of his vicious lies. Rodger's words hold as much weight as air.

Sorry... but there are a couple of people who truly disgust me. And to me, he belongs in the same category as Grace, Dimond, and Bashir."

Paris Jackson Lands Her First Movie Role

Paris Jackson is growing up -- and ready to go Hollywood.
The late Michael Jackson's 13-year-old daughter has been cast in her first feature film, Lundon's Bridge and the Three Kings.
PHOTOS: Paris, her brothers and their late dad Michael Jackson
After British paper The Sun reported the casting news, the flick's official website (featuring professional headshots of Paris) confirmed that the pop star's eldest will headline the oddball cast of the underwater fantasy flick.
Her castmates include Larry King and wife Shawn King, N Sync's Joey Fatone and Love Boat alum Ted Lange.

Based on fantasy novels by Dennis H. Christen Lundon's Bridge, Jackson plays Lundon O'Malley; the plot involves a dolphin turned into a human, a teenage boy who morphs into a dragonfly and a jellyfish queen who changes into an evil fairy godmother.
Profits from the film -- principal shooting has just begun -- will go towards funding the U.S. school system. Michael Jackson, who died at age 50 in June 2009, famously became a child star when he and his brothers burst on the music scene in the early 1970s as the Jackson Five.

Michael's kids at the tribtue in UK

much credit goes to TMZ

As the Michael Jackson tribute concert gets underway in Wales, Michael's daughter Paris was spotted backstage wearing Michael's iconic jacket (not THE jacket, but an exact replica) from the music video "Thriller."

We're told Paris will appear on stage wearing the jacket, alongside her brothers, when they give a speech during the show. Blanket was seen backstage as well (below) wearing Michael's familiar black suit, red shirt, black tie, red armband.

According to our sources, La Toya has been helping the kids out to prepare for the event and even got them dressed today for the concert.

Michael Jackson's 'Immortal' Won't Be His Last Album, Says Estate

Michael Jackson's next posthumous album will be released in November and be chocked full of newly discovered outtakes and alternate versions of old hits, Epic Records announced on Monday.

"Immortal" is actually the soundtrack for the new Cirque du Soleil show, "The Immortal World Tour," which debuted on Sunday. The album features an alternative version of the Jackson 5 hit, "ABC," as well as a series of mashups and remixes. His first posthumous album, 2010's "Michael," reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 in a brief, 3-week stint on the chart.

The new stage show and tour is comprised of more than 60 songs from Jackson's catalog, but the album release will be available as a 15-track album or a deluxe 22-track album that will go on sale Nov. 21.

Billboard.com spoke to Jamie King, the director of the Cirque production, who said "the big, iconic songs are there, with some other songs mixed and matched throughout. There's some younger Michael in there as well, 'Ben,' the Motown stuff...It's a mixed bag of tricks in terms of songs. It's a music-driven show, so we're making sure the music is the narrative that drives us and takes us on the journey."

Jackson had a treasure trove of unreleased material upon his death in 2009. "Immortal" has the full backing of his estate, co-managed by attorney Howard Weitzman, who told us that in addition to the Cirque show, the Jackson estate is contemplating several other projects. The 25th anniversary of the "Bad" album in 2012 may be commemorated with a special package similar to 2008's "Thriller 25," while another set of unreleased material to follow 2010's "Michael" collection is also being considered.

"It's a pretty vibrant estate in the sense that it continues to generate not just catalog opportunities but plenty of other ideas," Weitzman says.

Tour will honour Michael Jackson's life

MICHAEL Jackson's siblings Tito and Rebbie Jackson are to visit Bristol as part of a new live tour paying tribute to the superstar.

The tour, starting in March, will honour the pop icon's life and is called A Jackson Named Michael: Remembering a Legend.

TV star and producer David Gest, who was one of Jackson's closest childhood friends, will be joined by the late singer's brother and sister as well as singer Deniece Williams, famous for her number one UK hits Let's Hear It For The Boy, Free and Too Much, Too Little, Too Late.
The shows will include music and interviews, with never-before-told details about Michael Jackson and his phenomenal career.
Williams, a Jackson family friend for nearly five decades, grew up near the Jackson family home in Gary, Indiana.
She will perform a number of her hit tunes along with renditions from Rebbie Jackson, who made the top 10 in the US with her hit entitled Centipede.
Tito Jackson will perform some of the classic Jackson 5 and the Jacksons hits including Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground) with the audience joining in.
The setting for each show will be intimate with just a trio, pianist and movie screen, while the stage itself will be adorned with images of Michael.
The tour will run across the UK but it is not yet known which venue will be used for the show in Bristol and the date is still to be confirmed.

Cirque du Soleil stages world premiere of Michael Jackson's World Tour

The event: The music, moves and legacy of Michael Jackson got the fantasy treatment Sunday night as Cirque du Soleil staged the world premiere of The Immortal World Tour. It's the biggest project formally authorized by the estate since the star's 2009 death.
The crowd: A capacity audience of 13,000 included brothers Tito, Jackie and Marlon Jackson, mom Katherine and Michael's kids Prince, 14; Paris ,13; and Blanket, 9.
The tour: Today's show launched a 47-city North American tour that will make its U.S. debut Oct. 15 in Detroit. The tour — which will include a December residency at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas — is slated to wrap up July 20 in Chicago, though more dates are likely. A variation of the show will establish a permanent Vegas home in late 2013.
The fans: On a wet and chilly night in Montreal, Sunday's opening drew fans from Brazil to Los Angeles, some decked out with glittery white gloves and classic Thrillerjackets.
The music: The show was an ecstatic barrage of hits from Jackson's solo career and Jackson 5 years. With vocal parts extracted from original studio tapes and mixed with a live band (directed by Jackson keyboardist Greg Phillinganes), it was a four-dimensional funky swirl of sound. The set ran through a host of moods — a night where the tender Childhood seamlessly segued into the crackling Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'.
The performance: The Jamie King-directed show featured Cirque's typical attention to detail, from meticulously constructed props (glowing hearts, a handsome hot-air balloon) to exquisite cast numbers choreographed by longtime Jackson associates such as Travis Payne. Unlike traditional Cirque shows, Immortal was presented less as a nouveau circus than a fantasy concert, with some of Jackson's signature moves cast through Cirque's whimsical prism.
The centerpiece: A re-creation of Jackson's Giving Tree, the backyard spot at his Neverland Ranch where he often retreated for musical inspiration.
The wow factor: Human Nature featured performers dangling over the stage, gorgeously dotted with lights against a backdrop of stars. A giant white glove and dancing shoes appeared for Beat It, and the Giving Tree sprouted a sprawling set of claws for Thriller, which featured mummies and white-tuxedoed zombies. Peace symbols adorned the chests on the robotic warriors of They Don't Care About Us. While the show featured no singular story line, broad themes of compassion, human connection and global consciousness were sketched throughout.
The King of Pop: Jackson's images were a constant presence, and he occasionally had the stage to himself: I'll Be There featured just his voice accompanied by a live piano, childhood footage playing on a big onstage screen.
The brothers: Backstage, three beaming Jackson brothers declared that the show captured Michael's spirit. "That was Michael's message — to help us understand that love is so important," Tito says. The family was particularly moved by the interpretation of Gone Too Soon. "Our mother is probably bawling out there somewhere," Jackie says.

Michael Jackson Tribute Concert Now Pay-Per-View on Facebook

Can't make it to Cardiff, Wales for the Michael Jackson tribute concert on Oct. 8? Facebook has it covered.
Milyoni, which calls itself a leader in "F-commerce" or Facebook commerce, is teaming with Ridgeline Entertainment to broadcast the show online via Facebook. The live broadcast, scheduled for Oct. 8, will cost $3.99 via PayPal or $4.99 the day of the show. Unsurprisingly, users can also pay the equivalent amount via Facebook Credits, either 40 Credits in advance or 50 the day of the show.
That's significantly cheaper than the prices being offered for actually showing up, which range from 55 pounds for general admission (via the official site) to 95 pounds for the "golden circle" in front of the stage. And, of course, there are the hospitality packages for over 4,700 pounds, spread across a dozen guests.
The Michael Jackson tribute concert will be broadcast live on October 8 via Facebook from the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales using Milyoni's Social Live technology. It will begin at 10 AM PT, and feature cameras which are situated to give a "front row seat" like experience, with multiple shots and angles, according to a Milyoni representative.
It's noteworthy that the concert is also being characterized as an app, the same category that aWarner Bros. show, "Aim High," is. Produced by McG, the show will allow a user who opts in to be digitally inserted into the show as background materials, along with friends.
The reported Michael Jackson tribute concert lineup includes Christina Aguilera, The Black Eyed Peas, Jennifer Hudson and Smokey Robinson, plus Cee Lo Green, Leona Lewis, Craig David, and 3T, otherwise known as Tito Jackson's three sons.
According to reports, the event has not been without controversy; the concert is scheduled to take place during the trial of the doctor accused in Jackson's death.
Jackson died at age 50 in L.A. on June 25, 2009, galvanizing social media searches and sparking arash of malware capitalizing on his death.
Mother Katherine Jackson announced the "Michael Forever The Tribute Concert" with Marlon, Tito, Jackie and La Toya Jackson earlier this year. But Jermaine and Randy Jackson have objected.
"While we wholeheartedly support the spirit of a tribute that honors our brother, we find it impossible to support an event that is due to take place during the criminal trial of the doctor accused in Jackson's death," the two said in a statement to CNN.
The band KISS was also dropped after singer Gene Simmons told Classic Rock magazine that "There's no question in my mind he molested those kids. Not a doubt," in reference to the molestation charges of which Jackson was acquitted after a 2005 trial in California, Billboard reported.

New Michael Jackson Figures At Madame Tussauds For Second Anniversary

Michael Jackson fans have one more way to remember the pop superstar on the anniversary of his passing. Madame Tussauds in Hollywood is hosting the "Michael Jackson Experience" from now until Labor Day to commemorate the second anniversary of his death on June 25.
Jermaine Jackson was there yesterday to unveil three new wax statues capturing his brother at different stages in his career: as a child in Jackson 5, performing "Smooth Criminal" in the 80s, and in the "This Is It" performance right before his death.

At the event, Jermaine Jackson also unveiled plans for a Jackson 5 reunion tour, reports CNN. Jackson didn't reveal which members of the family would tour, but he did say:
The brothers now are ready just to keep the legacy going and the music... We're meeting today about putting a tour together just to play the music because it's such wonderful music. We need to continue to play this music because it's healing for us.

Janet Jackson to perform a virtual duet with Michael Jackson

Singer set to play 'Scream' at London show

Janet Jackson is set to perform a virtual duet with brother Michael in London this week.

The singer will play the Royal Albert Hall this Thursday (June 30) and is set to perform a version of their 1995 duet 'Scream' on stage.

Speaking to Heart FM Jackson said: "It's therapeutic, you know and it makes me smile inside. I mean the energy of the song is fierce but makes it makes me smile inside when I hear him, when I hear his voice."
Jackson said that last time she performed at the venue, she accidentally flashed the Queen.

"I performed 'Rhythm Nation' there, in front of Her Majesty the Queen and on stage I split my pants, or trousers as you'd say! I bent over and I ripped my pants right down the middle, right in the middle of dancing but I had to finish the song. So my booty is hanging out but what can you do, it was so embarrassing.'

Michael Jackson & Barry Gibb Recording studio footage of "ALL IN YOUR N...

enjoy!!

Michael Jackson was 'easiest person' to write songs with

Michael Jackson was the "easiest person to write" songs with according to Barry Gibb.
The legendary 'This is it' singer - who passed away from acute Propofol intoxication in June 2009 -worked with the Bee Gees star on track called 'All in Your Name' in 2002. While it was never released, Barry has posted a clip of them recording it and his memories of their time together online.
The 30 second clip sees Barry and Michael in a vocal booth laying down vocals over lush orchestral instrumentation.
Barry wrote of his friend: "Michael Jackson and I were the dearest of friends, that's simply what it was.
"We gravitated towards the same kind of music and we loved collaborating and he was the easiest person to write with."
He also wrote how he felt the song was a message by Michael to his fans all over the world.
He added: "'All in Your Name' is in fact the message that Michael wanted to send out to all of his fans all over the World that he did it all for them and for the pure love of music. I hope and pray that we all get to hear it in its entirety. This experience I will treasure forever."
Barry is currently writing songs for a new release, although at this time it has not been confirmed if this will feature 'All in Your Name', with Michael.
